Presentation at International Lakes Tourism Conference

A further presentation of the results of this project will be made on June 22 at the International Lakes Tourism Conference at Lakehead University, Thunder Bay. This presentation is titled “Building Local Capacity for Indigenous Tourism Development Related to Conservation: A Case Study of the Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation and The East Arm of Great Slave Lake”. Presentations at CAG and ANSER Conferences

Two presenations stemming from the results of this research will be given at the Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG) AGM and the Association for Non-profit and Social Economy Research (ANSER) AGM at the Conference of the Social Sciences and Humanities at Carleton University in Ottawa. The presentation that I will be giving at the CAG is titled “Maximizing Gateway Community Benefits from Conservation through Capacity Building: A Case Study of Thaidene Nene and Lutsel K’e, NWT” and the presentation scheduled for ANSER is titled “The Role of the Social Economy in Facilitating Community Social and Economic Development Related to Conservation: A Case Study of Lutsel K’e and Thaidene Nene”. Both presentations are scheduled for May 28, 2009.

Presentation in Las Vegas at AAG

As part of the funding arrangement through the Social Economy Network of Northern Canada, we will be presenting results from this project at several conferences. The first presentation is at the American Association of Geographer’s Annual General Meeting in Las Vegas on March 22, 2009. The presentation is titled “Differing Perspectives on the Community Benefits of Conservation: A Comparison of Local and External Perspectives on A Proposed National Park”. A copy of the presentation has been posted under the presentations section of this website.

Presentation at Yukon College

Preliminary results of this project will be presented at the Yukon College on January 29th, 2009. This presentation will have a particular focus on the role of the social economy in helping the community to achieve its social and economic development objectives related to the park. The presentation is titled “The Relationship of the Social Economy to Community Development and Park Creation: A Case Study in Lutsel K’e, Northwest Territories”. Returning To Lutsel K’e in January

I will be returning to Lutsel K’e from January 7th-12th to update our community partners on project progress. My supervisor and the project’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Harvey Lemelin, will be visiting Lutsel K’e with me. The purpose of this visit is to 1) update our community partner on the project’s progress, 2) report back some of our preliminary results, 3) consult on the community report, publications and some upcoming conference presentations (American Association of Geographers, Canadian Association of Geographers, Association for Nonprofit and Social Economy Research), and 4) hopefully to head out on the land. We are looking forward to being in Lutsel K’e at the coldest and darkest time of the year.

Researcher Receives Aurora Fellowship and Assistantship

Successful applications were made by the principal researcher for the Aurora Research Institute’s Fellowship and Assistantship. This funding, provided by the Aurora Research Institute (Website) is intended to cover research expenses and will support the transcription of interviews and the hiring of a research assistant upon our return to the community.

I want to thank all of the people of Lutsel K’e who made my time there such an incredible experience. Community members took me out fishing, brought me smoked fish to the door, took me out on the lake and took the time to share their insights and stories with me. Thanks for helping me to feel at home during my time in Lutsel K’e. I look forward to returning in January and again in the spring.

After almost a year of buildup to this project, we have completed the first 4 steps of the research project and our interviews with community members and externals are currently underway. At this stage, in order to keep the project partners updated (Thaidene Nene Working Group, Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation, Lakehead University Research Team and Funding Bodies) on the current status of the project, Nathan Bennett developed this website.
